Living From the Outside In
Scientists will tell you that the mind is made of many intricate parts, but let’s simplify by viewing the mind as two parts. The first part is the conscious mind which is connected to the world around us through our senses; what we hear, see, smell, taste and touch. The second part is the sub-conscious mind, the emotional mind. That’s where memories, belief systems, self-image and habits are stored. The conscious mind impresses thoughts on to the sub-conscious mind in the form of feelings which dictates actions to the body. The body carries out those actions, and the actions produce results.
Our Emotional Roller Coaster
From the time we were born, we’ve been conditioned to let outside factors influence how we perceive ourselves, and so life can feel like an emotional roller coaster. One minute, we’re feeling great because we’ve invested time and effort into a business development proposal, and the next minute we feel inadequate because our boss rejects our ideas. Over time, living from the outside in has a real cost that impacts more than how we’re feeling. It impacts our results.

Our Paradigm
These outside experiences feed what we call our Paradigm, our programming. It’s composed of ideas fixed in our sub-conscious mind. Our Paradigm puts us in a mental box out of which we can’t grow unless significant, permanent changes are made. It controls our actions. We do one thing even when we know we should be doing something else.
Our current results are registered in our conscious minds in the form of thoughts. These thoughts produce feelings in our sub-conscious minds. Those feelings are expressed as actions that produce results, the same results. It’s an endless cycle.
Ending the Cycle
To end this cycle, we can’t give so much power to our current results. They’re not a reflection of our full potential. They’re just the result of old thinking.
We need to focus on being more selective about the thoughts that we internalize, and here’s how. We all have higher mental faculties; perception, will, imagination, memory, reason and intuition. We can use these faculties to create an image of what we want our future to look like. Those new positive thoughts, produce new feelings, which lead to improved actions, which will achieve more desired results.
